Eat MHOR food - Scotland

At the end of April and for the beginning of May, I spent some unbelievable days in a country I'd never explored before: Scotland. Now, I know travel can be a contentious issue with those who are very "green" at heart, but if the pond must be crossed (my excuse is a very close friend's wedding) then measures can be taken to offset the voyage. This is not the topic of this post, but will be in an upcoming one. Today, I would like to introduce you to a cool Scottish company that my just married friends introduced me to on a day trip to rugged Glencoe in mid-western Scotland.

In the car on the drive to this unbelievably scenic part of the country, my friends started telling me about this company they'd come across called "MHOR". They knew of my interest in local, organic food and told me they had a treat in store. This was going to be good because these friends have great taste and an eye for hidden treasures. They passed a brochure to me in the backseat and I read on.

Monachyle Mhor hotel and restaurant is located in Balquhidder, Lochearnhead, Perthshire. The names almost tell the story better than I ever could. This company started as a hill farm and then grew to a bed and breakfast and the rest, this family might say, is history.

Yes, the hotel and restaurant is pink. On our journey to this unthinkable prize in the mountains, we tried first to have a cup of tea and a delicious scone at one of the company's many new enterprises: MHORTea. This cute little tea shop on the road to the restaurant happened to be closed (on a Tuesday!), so we were forced to go and grab lunch at the Pepto-pink hotel. Celeriac soup was had by all and various types of delectable sandwiches were consumed. Forget plain water, we had it sparkling.

MHOR appears to be a concept company all based around amazing, local food. Not too far away from the hotel, restaurant, farm and tea room is MHORFish and MHORbread located in a town called Callander. You can even take courses on how to raise chickens and build stone walls from MHOR - could they get any cooler? This company really knows what they are doing and I am really glad my good friends introduced it to me.

Great food and ideas like this are true treasures, but they exist in many other places in the world. I am looking forward to discovering more great food right here at home in Toronto. If you're not hungry yet, go to www.mhor.net and you will be. Bon appetit!
