Less is More
Alright, so I have been VERY lax with my posting over the past month, but I have a lame excuse. The past few weeks have been full of many wedding-related activities (not my own, but a good friend's) and one of them involved a trip to Cuba to celebrate pre-nuptials.
The subject for this post has to do with this trip and what I am sure at least a few of you also experience when making the decision to travel to distant places: flyer's guilt.
Before I made the decision to go on this trip, I knew that my choice would have an impact on the planet and I was determined to do something about it. I have read about ways to reduce this impact (also known as carbon offsets - a way to reduce emissions through the purchase of credits from organizations that run projects resulting in less carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere) and decided to put my money where my mouth is.
According to the David Suzuki Foundation, travelling by air accounts for four to nine per cent of the total climate change impact of human activity. The Foundation and other organizations recommend taking trips closer to home, using other modes of transportation where possible, minimizing the number of trips you take, travelling economy and during the day and, as a last resort, purchasing carbon offsets to account for the added emissions.
In partnership with the Pembina Institute, the David Suzuki Foundation has produced a guide to purchasing carbon offsets. which I used to help purchase my offsets for this trip. My choice was Less.ca, but you may look through the guide and choose another.
If you're flying anytime soon, check out: www.less.ca.
